Zana Bell and Uchechukwu Peter Umezurike to Judge The 2019 K & L Prize for African Literature

We are pleased to announce that organisers of the 2019 K & L Prize for African Literature have released the judges for its inaugural short story competition.

The judges’ names are Zana Bell and Uchechukwu Peter Umezurike.

 

They judges will be looking for the best short story inspired by a historical event on the African continent.

Our advice is that writers should aim to create compelling stories that have characters readers will care about.

 

Zana Bell grew up in Zimbabwe. She is an award-winning author of six internationally-published novels. She holds a PhD in Creative Writing from the Auckland University of Technology, New Zealand. Her research work addressed issues of identity, migration, colonisation and postcolonial fallout from a feminine perspective. She is a senior tutor at NorthTec where she teaches writing for creative industries.

 

Uchechukwu Peter Umezurike is a PhD student and a Vanier Scholar at the English and Film Studies department in the University of Alberta. His poetry, short fiction, creative non-fiction, and children’s literature have appeared in print and online anthologies. His articles have also been published in Postcolonial Text and Tydskrif vir letterkunde, etc. An Alumnus of the International Writing Program (USA), Uche has participated in residencies in Ghana, India, Switzerland, and Italy. He was one of the winners of the Commonwealth Short Story Competition and has twice been shortlisted for NLNG’s Nigeria Prize for Literature. He is a Board Member of the Ebedi International Writer’s Residency. His current research is focused on representations of masculinities in contemporary Nigerian fiction.

 

The K & L Prize is sponsored by New Zealand-based Nigerian novelist Myles Ojabo. He has a master’s degree in creative writing and a doctorate, both from Auckland University of Technology, New Zealand. His novel, Black River: An Account of Christmas Preacher appeared in 2018.

 

ELIGIBILITY FOR THE K & I Prize for Literature

  • Only Africans residing in the African continent are eligible
  • All entrants must be within the ages of 18 to 25.

 

HOW CAN YOU APPLY

  • Your stories must be sent send as an email attachment
  • Don’t forget to paste a brief bio in the body of the email
  • Your bio must include age, nationality, and city of residence.
  • Subject title of the email should include entrant’s name, age, and short story title.
  • Email your submission as an attachment to [email protected].

 

Don’t forget that the deadline for submissions is 1st December 2018.
