The Afritondo Short Story Prize 2024/ How to Apply (Prizes: $1400 + Publication)

The Afritondo Short Story Prize is open to submissions from writers who identify as Black or who are of African descent.

Afritondo is a media and publishing platform that aims to connect with and tell the stories of Africans and black minority populations across the globe. Their main aim is to improve diversity in publishing by offering aspiring African and black minority writers a viable platform for telling their stories.

This is the 5th year of the Afritondo Short Story Prize and a special landmark for them, therefore if you are an eloquent writer and gifted storyteller send them your work.

Guidelines for the Afritondo Short Story Prize 2024

This year they want writers to respond to the theme of “fate”. You are welcome to give the theme your own personal interpretation.

They want stories that surprise them, that take risks with imagination and language. A good story for their theme will offer unique insight into the theme and explore characters in refreshing and imaginative ways.


  • You are a citizen or national of an African country.

  • One of your parents is a national of an African country.

  • You are of black ethnicity or belong to a black minority population anywhere in the world.

Submission Guidelines

  • Submissions must be made within the stated deadline. Any submission after the deadline will be disregarded.

  •  Submissions must be in English.

  •    Submissions must reflect the theme.

  •      Only one submission per writer is allowed.

  •    The submission, including the title, must be between 3000 and 5000 words. Learn about writing creative and inspiring fiction for this submission from T.J Benson

  • The submission should be in Microsoft Word (doc, docx) and in the following format:

      •     Double-spaced, Times New Roman or Calibri font, 12-point size
      • The title of the story should appear at the top of the first page, followed by the word count. No further information is required.
      • Every page must be numbered.


  • The author’s name or detail must not be included anywhere on the document to be uploaded. The document must contain only the title, word count, and story. All entries are judged anonymously.


  • Submission is accepted only via email. Entries should be sent to

    • The subject of the submission should read: Submission for Afritondo Short Story Prize 2024.

    • The filename of the entry (i.e. the attached document) must be the title of the short story.

    • Finally, in the body of the form, tell them briefly about yourself, including such information as your legal name, country of residence, age, and contact details.

  •  Entries must not have been previously published or shortlisted for another prize. Also, entries published or shortlisted during the judging or publishing process will be disqualified.

Afritondo Short Story Prize Guidelines




  • The winner will receive a cash prize of $1000.
  • Four other shortlisted writers will get $100 each.
  • The longlist will be published in an anthology in August 2024.


Deadline for the Afritondo Short Story Prize 2024

All submissions must be done by December 15, 2023.
