Writer in the Park Residency at Ljubljana

Apply for the Writer in the Park Residency

Ljubljana, Slovenia’s capital, is a city deeply committed to books, writers, and literary exchange. Named World Book Capital in 2010 and designated a UNESCO City of Literature in 2015, Ljubljana has become a vibrant hub for international writers, publishers, and readers. Its Writer in the Park residency offers foreign writers a rare opportunity to work in a peaceful environment while engaging with an active and diverse literary scene.

Established in 2018, the residency balances quiet, uninterrupted writing time with access to festivals, readings, and cultural networks across the city.

Residency Overview

The Writer in the Park program offers two one-month residencies for writers at the Švicarija/Swisshouse Creative Centre, part of the International Centre of Graphic Arts (MGLC).

Residency Periods

  • April 1–30, 2026
  • November 1–30, 2026

The dates are fixed, though shorter stays may be possible due to travel needs. Extra nights outside the residency period are not covered.

Eligibility Requirements for the Writer in the Park Residency

Foreign published writers with a clear and demonstrable connection to another UNESCO City of Literature are the target of this residency. Applicants must explain this connection in their application, which may be based on residence, long-term work, or professional affiliation.

Applicants must:

  • Have published at least one book of fiction (prose, poetry, or drama)
  • Be connected to a UNESCO City of Literature other than Ljubljana or Celje
  • Be willing to participate in international literary exchange

There are no restrictions based on age, nationality, race, or gender.

Local writers based in Ljubljana or Celje are not eligible.

What the Writer in the Park Residency Offers

Each selected writer receives:

  • €1,250 gross, covering grant and travel expenses
  • private, fully equipped apartment with kitchenette at Švicarija
  • Covered local transportation, including airport transfer
  • Internet access
  • Opportunities for public readings, presentations, and networking
  • Introductions to translators, editors, publishers, and local writers when relevant

Residents are responsible for meals, medical insurance, and personal expenses. Additional guests are not permitted.

Life at Švicarija

Švicarija is located in Ljubljana’s central park, just steps from the city center. The environment is quiet and nature-filled, yet connected to exhibitions, studios, and public cultural programs. Residents should note that:

  • Access is on foot only, involving a short uphill walk through the park
  • A restaurant downstairs may host weekend events, especially in summer

Writers seeking maximum quiet may prefer the November residency period.

What Is Expected of Residents

Residents are encouraged to:

  • Engage with local literary events and cultural activities
  • Participate in selected group or networking activities

However, writers may also request minimal engagement if they prefer to focus fully on writing or research.

Application Requirements

Submit applications only through the official Google Form. The committee will not consider incomplete or late applications.

Required materials include:

  • letter of recommendation signed by an organization from your chosen UNESCO City of Literature
  • cover letter with an autobiographical statement and publishing background
  • Supporting documents uploaded via a Google account

Writers preparing application materials may find it helpful to review examples of strong statements of purpose and understand how long a cover letter should be when applying for international literary opportunities.
