The Queen’s Commonwealth Essay Competition 2019 / How To Apply (Win An All-Expense Paid Trip To London)

Entries are currently being accepted for this year’s edition of The Queen’s Commonwealth Writing Contest. The theme for the Queen’s commonwealth essay competition 2019 is: A Connected Commonwealth.

So if you enjoy writing essays, poems or letters, this is your chance to impress the Queen of England and other prolific writers. And who knows? Your entry might be selected for the grand award. Winners will be flown to London.

Eligibility Guidelines for The Queen’s Commonwealth Essay Competition 2019 / How To Apply

  • Entrants must be from commonwealth countries. writers from Maldives and Zimbabwe are welcome to apply.
  • Entrants for the senior category must be between the ages of 14 – 18 by 1st of June. Junior category entrants must be under the age of 14 by 2nd June, 2019.
  • Entries must be original. Beware of plagiarism.
  • Entries must be written in English Language. Do not exceed the word count.
  • Maximum word count for senior category: 1500 words. Maximum word count for junior category entrants: 750.
  • Entries must reflect the current theme. Don’t forget: the theme for the Queen’s commonwealth essay competition 2019 is: A Connected Commonwealth.
  • Only one entry per participant is allowed.
  • Entries can be in any genre: essay, poetry, or letter format.

Entrants are expected to choose one of the following topics for The Queen’s Commonwealth Essay Competition 2019:

SENIOR CATEGORY

Born between 2 June 2000 and 1 June 2005 (14-18 years of age)

  1. ‘You are the most optimistic, connected generation the world has ever known.’ HRH The Duke of Sussex. How can you use Commonwealth connections for positive change?
  2. Connected by the oceans; can we work together to protect the environment?
  3. ‘We are all now connected by the Internet’ – Stephen Hawking. What does the future hold for humankind?
  4. Family, Community, Nation, Commonwealth. What are the opportunities for shared, sustainable growth?

JUNIOR CATEGORY

Born on or after 2 June 2005 (under 14 years of age)

  1. My cultural connections.
  2. An overseas visitor is coming to your town for the first time.  How would you connect with them?
  3. A place I feel connected to.
  4. The Commonwealth connects people across borders – what can we learn from our neighbours?

How to Submit your Entry for The Queen’s Commonwealth Essay Competition 2019

  • Make sure your manuscript is properly formatted. Files must be in MS Word or pdf formats. Use double spacing , 12pt ariel or sans fonts for prose and single spacing for poetry submissions.
  • The deadline for offline (postal ) submissions has passed, so writers must send in their entries via the commonwealth’s new submissions portal.
  • To submit your essay, visit https://essay.thercs.org or click to use the new Commonwealth Essay Contest Submissions Portal.
  • Ensure that your entry is submitted before Midnight on 1st June 2019.

Prizes and Awards  for the Queen’s Commonwealth Essay Competition 2019

All entrants will receive a certificate of participation.

Top 2 entrants and runners-up will:

  • Win An All-Expense Paid Trip To London for educational and cultural events.
  • Have their essays published
  • And lots more.
