Benefits of the Kyoto Artist Residency

Successful applicants will receive a comprehensive support package that includes:

  • ¥200,000 (tax included) production and research subsidy per project
  • Public relations support
  • Assistance from Kyoto Art Center art coordinators

The residency is designed to encourage research, experimentation, and artistic development rather than the completion of a finished performance.

Who Can Apply?

The residency welcomes:

  • Emerging performing artists
  • Performing arts researchers
  • Individual artists and artist groups

Applicants should have a compelling artistic or research project that requires meaningful engagement with Kyoto’s cultural, historical, or artistic environment. Participants must also be able to communicate in either English or Japanese throughout the residency.

Residency Periods

Applicants may choose one of the following residency windows:

  • 1 May – 31 August 2027
  • 1 November 2027 – 29 February 2028

Each residency lasts up to three months.

How to Prepare a Strong Application

The selection committee looks for more than an interesting project idea. Applicants must clearly explain why Kyoto is essential to their research or artistic development and demonstrate how the residency period will be used effectively.

Receiving a professional writing critique can help refine your project description, improve clarity, and ensure your ideas communicate your artistic goals effectively.

Many residency applications also require personal statements explaining your background, creative practice, and future ambitions. Reviewing successful statement of purpose examples can provide useful guidance on presenting your artistic journey, research interests, and long-term career objectives in a persuasive and authentic way.
