Poetic Justice Institute: Editor’s Prize for BIPOC writers/Submission Guidelines (Pay: $1,000)

The Poetic Justice Institute: Editor’s Prize for BIPOC writers seek poetry that challenges complacency and explores transformation in both thought and form.

Two prizes are awarded annually: the PJI Prize (open to all poets with a $28 entry fee) and the PJI Editor’s Prize (specifically for BIPOC writers, with no fee). Winners will receive publication through Fordham University Press, along with a $1,000 cash prize and other benefits.

Submission Guidelines For Poetic Justice Institute: Editor’s Prize for BIPOC Writers riters

  • Application period is from September 1 – October 15, 2024.
  • Poetry manuscripts should be between 50 to 100 pages in length.
  • Writers may enter both the PJI Prize and the PJI Editor’s Prize, though the latter is exclusively for BIPOC writers and is fee-free.
  • Ensure your manuscript is polished and follows the format guidelines provided by the institute.

What They Don’t Want

  • Incomplete or unpolished manuscripts.
  • Manuscripts outside the suggested length (50-100 pages).
  • Non-poetry submissions.
  • Submissions without a clear sense of purpose or form.

 

Eligibility Criteria For Poetic Justice Institute: Editor’s Prize for BIPOC Writers

  • The PJI Editor’s Prize is open specifically to BIPOC writers and is fee-free.

Author Rights

Writers retain the copyright to their work.

The winning manuscripts will be published by Fordham University Press, ensuring high production values and national distribution.

The selected authors will work closely with the editors during the publication process.

Payment

Winners of both the PJI Editor’s Prize will receive:

  • $1,000 cash prize.
  • Publication with Fordham University Press.
  • A one-on-one publicity and marketing consultation.
  • A virtual launch through the Poetic Justice Event Series.

 

Deadline

Submissions for the PJI Editor’s Prize must be received by October 15, 2024.

 

Judging and Selection Process

  • The PJI Editor’s Prize for BIPOC authors will be chosen by Elisabeth Frost in conjunction with past winners.
  • Winners are selected based on the quality and originality of their poetry, with a focus on innovative forms, documentary methods, and visual poetics.
