Submission Guidelines for Driftwood Press

Fiction Submissions

  • Short Story (Normal Category):
Open in February and August. Writers may submit one prose piece per submission, up to 5,000 words. Payment: $150 for accepted stories. Submissions are read blind by two editors.
  • Short Story (One-Week Response Option):
For a $250 fee, receive a roughly one-week response and a Driftwood Press book mailed to your U.S. address. This category is open for only two months per year. Only one judge — often the managing fiction editor — considers your submission. The fee does not guarantee acceptance.
  • Novella:
Submission fee: $19.99. Payment terms discussed upon acceptance.

Note: Driftwood avoids young adult, fantasy, romance, novel chapters, and mainstream mystery fiction. They’re open to experimentalism, surrealism, and literary work with narrative momentum.

Poetry Submissions

  • Full-Length Collection:
    Submission fee: $19.99.
  • Single Poems (One-Week Response Option):
Receive a quick turnaround on your poetry submission.

Graphic Novels, Short Comics, and Visual Art

Driftwood Press seeks graphic novel manuscripts and shorter visual works. While they appreciate a variety of styles, they do not publish superhero narratives or scripts without an artist.

  • Samples: May lead to further discussion, but not publication alone.
  • Full/Partial Manuscripts: Preferred to see the full manuscript.
  • Payment: Based on page count, paid upon contract signing.
  • Royalties:
    • 15% for the first 1,000 copies sold
    • 20% for sales above 1,000 copies
  • Art, Photography, & Short Comics (Free Submission):
    • Individual works: 1 image to 22 comic pages.
    • Photography: Up to 5 photos (or up to 20 if part of a series).
    • Must meet high-resolution requirements.
