  • Winners enjoy exclusive publication on Patreon before appearing in the Magazine.
  • Submission is limited to one entry per person per month, and the magazine does not accept reprints for this contest.


Reprints and Patreon Fiction Policy


While Apex Magazine does not accept unsolicited reprints, writers with Patreon accounts should note that stories published on Patreon are treated as reprints and are compensated accordingly. Pro-level writers with Patreon accounts are encouraged to query before submitting.


Rights and Rules For The Contest

  • Apex Magazine does not entertain simultaneous submissions or multi-submissions for short fiction.
  • The editorial team strives to respond to all submissions within 30 days, but longer wait times may occur if the story is under consideration by the editor-in-chief or managing editor.



Pay Rates


For original short fiction, Apex Magazine offers payment of $0.08 per word, up to 7,500 words, with a minimum payment of $50.

If your story is selected for podcasting, an additional payment of $0.01 per word is provided. The magazine also welcomes English translations, requiring information on the translator for due credit.
