The PEN/Bare Life Review Grants ($5,000)
The PEN/Bare Life Review Grants are a major opportunity for immigrant and refugee writers working on impactful literary projects. Established by PEN America in partnership with The Bare Life Review, the grants are designed to support stories shaped by migration, displacement, and identity. In 2027, two writers will each receive $5,000 to help complete an unpublished work in progress.
Eligibility Requirements for the PEN/Bare Life Review Grants
The Grants are open to:
- Foreign-born writers currently based in the United States
- Writers living abroad with refugee or asylum status
Writers can submit literary projects (fiction, creative nonfiction, or poetry) as long as they are not scheduled for publication before April 15, 2027. Writers can submit only one work each year, and they must write or translate the work into English.
Submission Guidelines for the PEN/Bare Life Review Grants
To apply for the grants, applicants must submit a single PDF through Submittable containing:
- A 1–2 page project description
- A 1–2 page statement explaining how the grant will support completion
- A CV highlighting previous publications
- A detailed project outline
- A writing sample (up to 40 pages for poetry, 75 pages for prose)
Strong presentation matters. Polishing and professionalizing your manuscript can significantly improve your chances. Reviewing the basics of copy editing can help refine your submission and eliminate avoidable errors.
Why Apply?
The PEN/Bare Life Review Grants amplify underrepresented voices and validate stories that might otherwise go unheard. Past recipients have produced powerful works exploring exile, identity, and resilience, demonstrating the transformative impact of this grant.
Applying requires more than a strong manuscript—you also need a compelling application package. Presenting your experience clearly and professionally is key. Learning how to creatively write a resume for your dream job can help you structure your CV and supporting documents effectively.
Go through your manuscripts, edit, arrange your documents, and make sure to submit on time. Good luck!
