Program Overview

The University of Texas Press is offering two Publishing Fellowships for the 2026–2027 year:

  • Duration: September 1, 2026 – August 31, 2027
  • Location: In-person, Austin, Texas
  • Work Schedule: 40 hours per week
  • Application Deadline: March 31, 2026

Each fellow will be based in a primary department while gaining exposure to other areas across the Press.

Fellowship Tracks

1. Marketing and EDP (Editing, Design, and Production)

This track combines marketing and editorial production training.

Marketing responsibilities include:

  • Researching media outlets and managing review lists
  • Developing marketing plans and seasonal book copy
  • Assisting with publicity campaigns and correspondence

Editing, Design, and Production responsibilities include:

  • Manuscript preparation and file cleanup
  • Copyediting, proofreading, indexing
  • Project management alongside Press staff

2. Rights & Permissions and Acquisitions

This fellowship focuses on international publishing and manuscript development.

Rights & Permissions responsibilities include:

  • Preparing materials for international book fairs
  • Processing permission requests
  • Researching foreign publishers and maintaining mailing lists

Acquisitions responsibilities include:

  • Evaluating manuscripts and guiding peer review
  • Participating in editorial meetings
  • Learning the basics of book budgets and editorial workflows

Eligibility Requirements for the University of Texas Press Fellowship

  • Marketing & EDP Fellowship: Open to graduates of any university.
  • Rights & Permissions & Acquisitions Fellowship: Open only to alumni of the University of Texas at Austin.
  • Applicants must:
    • Be able to work in person, full-time.
    • Meet university employment eligibility requirements.
    • Have a strong interest in a publishing career.
    • Commit to completing the full fellowship year.

Training & Professional Development

Fellows receive in-depth training across multiple departments and attend:

  • The annual meeting of the Association of University Presses
  • One additional scholarly conference

Strategies for increasing your productivity as a writer.

Stipend and Benefits

  • Total Stipend: $43,000 for the year
    • $39,500 base pay
    • $3,500 health insurance stipend
  • Paid monthly: $3,583 per month (prorated if the fellow leaves early)
  • Visiting scholar status at UT Austin
  • Access to campus libraries and eligibility to purchase student health insurance
  • Paid time off and staff holidays
