Love & Light Essay Writing Contest | How to Apply

 

The Love & Light Foundation (formerly Made to Love Foundation), in partnership with Chiziterem Chijioke, has announced the 2025 Essay Writing Contest for African university students. This year’s theme is:

 

“The Rising Generation: Youth Solutions for a Just, Clean, and Climate-Ready Africa.”

The contest invites African students to share bold, creative, and solution-driven essays on how young people can lead the fight against poverty, inequality, and the climate crisis.

A Growing Legacy

This essay contest continues to build on its inspiring history:

  • Edition 1 (2024): Brought together over 40 powerful essays from students across nine African countries, showcasing youth-led ideas for poverty alleviation.
  • Edition 2 (2025): Returns with a broader vision under the Love & Light Foundation name, tackling the intersections of poverty, inequality, and climate change — while empowering African youth voices.

Eligibility Requirements for the Love & Light Essay

  • Open to all African university/tertiary students (proof of enrollment required).
  • No strict age limit.
  • Essays must be original, unpublished, and written in English.

Essay Guidelines

  • Word Count: Not more than 1,000 words.
  • Format: Typed, double-spaced, submitted as PDF or Word document.
  • Essays may be reflective, analytical, or solution-oriented — but must show personal insight or lived experience.
  • Proper referencing is required where applicable.

Judging Criteria

They will assess submissions based on:

  • Relevance to theme
  • Originality & creativity
  • Clarity & coherence
  • Emotional depth & authenticity
