Hell Gate Magazine Is Currently Accepting Pitches/ How To Submit (Pay: $200 – $400)

Hell Gate Magazine is a worker-owned news outlet covering New York City and they have been relaunched. They are looking for essays, reported stories, features, and photography.

If you are interested in pitching to them, please go through the following guidelines.

Submission Guidelines For Hell Gate Magazine

  • They are interested in essays, photography, reported stories, and features.
  • To pitch them, you can send them an email at [email protected]. It is important to make sure you put “PITCH” in the subject line.
  • For your pitch to be successful, you are advised read the stories on the website to get a feel for the kind of work they are looking for.
  • Keep your pitch brief, ideally under 500 words. If they are interested, you can always give them more detail later.
  • Be as specific as you can about what your story/essay/feature is about. Show them that you understand the story well enough to have an angle. They need to know that you have done some preliminary digging and know how you want to approach it, and that you are capable of pulling it off.

You can also send them photos of weird stuff happening on the street, reasonably informed rumors, story ideas, and complaints. You can send it to [email protected].

Before Hell Gate was even launched, they worked with the Freelance Solidarity Project of the National Writers Union to create a standard contract and a statement of commitments that promotes fair practices for freelance writers, photographers, and artists. Included in these commitments are:

Full payment for work on receipt of the final draft;
A promise to indemnify and defend a freelancer against any third-party claim;
Writer retains rights to their work; and
A grievance procedure with the National Writers Union.


Their rates are roughly the following:

$200+ for an essay or blog post. The word count should be approximately 700 words.
$250+ for a photo assignment.
$300+ for a reported story.
$400+ for a longer feature of 1,200+ words.
