Andeson Shalom Chidumebi Wins the September 2025 Ma Keke Contest

Gemspread Publishing has announced the winner and two runner-ups of the September 2025 flash fiction contest.

Ma Keke is a word from the Estako Language of Nigeria, which means ‘Let Us Write’. The goal of the contest is to encourage African writers to explore stories of 1000 words or less, based on a provided prompt. According to their website statement, they chose flash fiction for its urgency.

It’s a snapshot, a whispered secret, a gut punch. In a world of noise, a thousand words can be a revolution. It’s the perfect literary form to capture the fierce, fleeting, and unforgettable moments of Africa, now.

The Ma Keke Flash Fiction contest takes place monthly. Gemspread Publishing announces the prompt, accompanied by a 48-hour deadline period following the release of the prompt. In-house editors serve as the judges, and the winner is awarded $30, alongside publication in the quarterly issue of the magazine. The two runner-ups will also be published.
