Hodder Fellowship 2026: Princeton Fellowship Offers $93,000 Stipend for Artists

The Hodder Fellowship at Princeton University is now accepting applications from artists of exceptional promise for the 2027–2028 academic year. Administered by the Lewis Center for the Arts, the fellowship provides selected artists with the time and resources to pursue significant independent creative projects.

The fellowship comes with a $93,000 stipend for a 10-month appointment as a Visiting Fellow at Princeton University.

 

Hodder Fellowship 2026

The Hodder Fellowship is designed for artists and humanists who demonstrate exceptional promise and possess significant intellectual and creative ability. Applicants are selected more for their potential than for their previous accomplishments.

Historically, many successful Fellows have published a first book or achieved comparable recognition in their fields. The fellowship provides what Princeton describes as “studious leisure”—an opportunity to devote an academic year to developing substantial new work.

For the 2026 application cycle, applications are being accepted only for:

• Program in Dance
• Program in Theater and Music Theater
• Program in Visual Arts
• Department of Music

The fellowship is based in Princeton, New Jersey.

Benefits of the Hodder Fellowship

The successful applicants will spend an academic year at Princeton as Visiting Fellows.

The fellowship provides:

• $93,000 stipend
• 10-month full-time appointment
• Time to pursue an independent artistic project
• No formal teaching responsibilities

The Hodder Fellowship is intended to give artists dedicated time to develop significant new work rather than to fund work toward an advanced degree.

 

Eligibility Requirements for the Hodder Fellowship

• The fellowship is open to artists of exceptional promise working in the eligible disciplines.
• Applicants should note that the fellowship is a full-time appointment with Princeton. Fellows may not simultaneously hold teaching positions at other institutions during the fellowship.
• Past recipients of the Princeton Arts Fellowship and individuals who have maintained a sustained and continuous relationship with Princeton University are not eligible. Those whose relationship with Princeton has been occasional or sporadic may still apply.
• An applicant may apply for the Hodder Fellowship twice in a lifetime.
• The fellowship is also not intended to support work leading to an advanced degree.

Application Requirements

Applicants must submit the following materials:

1. Resume
2. 500-word project proposal describing the artistic project they intend to pursue during the 10-month fellowship
3. Work samples, accompanied by a 150-word statement explaining how the samples relate to the proposed project

Work samples may be submitted as links contained in a PDF.

 

Work Sample Guidelines

The required work samples vary according to the applicant’s discipline.

Dance

Applicants may submit 1–3 links to performances, rehearsals, or research.

The footage must be continuous. Trailers, photographs, and promotional materials are not accepted.

Cue points should be specified, with no more than 3–4 minutes identified for each link. All cue points combined should require no more than 10 minutes of viewing.

Music

Applicants may submit 1–2 scores and/or links to examples of performances.

The total performance material should be limited to 10 minutes. Video is optional.

Theater

Applicants may submit:

• Up to 15 pages of writing
• Up to 10 design images, including photographs or renderings
• A video or audio reel with cue points, limited to 10 minutes

Applicants may use one or a combination of these formats.

Visual Arts

Applicants may submit:

• Up to 20 still images; or
• Up to 10 minutes of video; or
• Up to 10 still images and 5 minutes of video

Video may represent a single work or excerpts from a longer work. Cue points should be provided when a longer work is linked.

Important Application Information

The Hodder Fellowship application opened on July 1, 2026.

Deadline:  Apply by September 9, 2026, at 11:59 PM Eastern Time

Applicants should submit their materials before the deadline because Princeton cannot confirm receipt of applications and does not accept late submissions.

The fellowship positions are not eligible for sponsorship of an H-1B visa requiring consular processing.
