Ann Petry Award 2026: $3,000 and Publication Opportunity for Black Writers
Red Hen Press, in partnership with the Peauxdunque Writers Alliance, is now accepting submissions for the 2026 Ann Petry Award, a prestigious literary prize dedicated to publishing outstanding prose by Black authors. The award offers both $3,000 and book publication, making it a significant opportunity for emerging and established writers alike.
About the Award
Founded in 2020, the Ann Petry Award honors exceptional unpublished prose—either a novel or a collection of short stories or novellas—by Black writers. The winning manuscript will be published by Red Hen Press, an independent nonprofit press known for championing bold, literary voices.
For 2026, acclaimed writer Lisa Teasley will judge the award.
Eligibility Requirements for the Ann Petry Award
To apply, you must:
- Be a Black writer
- Submit an unpublished prose manuscript (including self-published works)
- Submit a work of at least 150 pages
- Not have previously published a full-length book with Red Hen Press
- Not be an employee, contractor, intern, or relative of Red Hen Press staff or board members
Submission Guidelines
- Format: Times New Roman, 12 pt, double-spaced
- Manuscript must be anonymous (title only on cover page; no identifying information inside the manuscript)
- Minimum length: 150 pages
- Include your name, contact details, and short bio only in the cover letter
- Submit via Submittable
