The Waterston Desert Residency Writing Prize is accepting applications

The Waterston Desert Writing Prize embodies a tribute to the desert’s profound influence on the human narrative and ecosystem. The award is Inspired by Ellen Waterston’s passion for the High Desert. More so, it seeks to support writers who echo a similar connection to these arid landscapes.

 

Eligibility for The Waterston Desert Residency Writing Prize

  • The prize is open to Writers of literary nonfiction. Writers who demonstrate exceptional artistic expression, a deep connection to desert landscapes.
  • Furthermore, entrants must show a commitment to enriching desert literature.
  • Also, applicants should be working on or proposing a book-length manuscript closely aligned with the desert as both subject and setting.

Submission Applications

  • 1. Application Form (Open January 2nd, 2024):
    Complete the online application form on Submittable, ensuring it is the only location containing identifying information.
  • 2. Document Upload:
    – Combine the following into a single Word or PDF file without personal identifiers:
    Biographical Statement: One page summarizing educational, professional, and writing experience, emphasizing the significance of the Prize to your work.
    – Proposal Title and Description: One page detailing the project, including the proposed title, desert locations, and its contribution to desert literature.
    – Writing Sample: Up to 10 pages showcasing your literary prowess in nonfiction, aligned with the proposed project.
  • 3. Submission Process: Submit all materials via Submittable by 11:59 pm on Wednesday, May 1, 2024.
  • – Ensure completeness and adherence to guidelines to avoid disqualification.

The Waterston Desert Writing Prize


Rewards

  • The 2024 recipient of award will be honored with a $3,000 cash award
  • More so, the winner will be given the opportunity to a reading and reception at the prestigious High Desert Museum in Bend, Oregon, on September 26, 2024.
  • In addition, this milestone event marks the Prize’s tenth anniversary.
  • Further more, 12 months following the awarding of the Waterston Desert Writing Prize, the winner will provide the Museum with these
  • – a one-page report detailing how the award supported their work, project-related tasks accomplished during the year, news of publication plans, and a sample of the writing produced.
