The Republic Is Hiring Sub-Editors Across Nigeria and Africa
The Republic is expanding its editorial team and is currently recruiting sub-editors to help shape, commission, and refine high-quality journalism across Nigeria and the African continent. This is an exciting opportunity for experienced editors passionate about rigorous, reflective, and forward-looking storytelling.
About The Republic
The Republic is a Nigerian publication committed to in-depth journalism on politics, culture, business, international affairs, and the ideas shaping Nigeria and the African diaspora. The publication prioritizes depth over speed, clarity over spectacle, and context over noise—producing work that connects local realities to national, continental, and global conversations.
The Role
Sub-editors will lead distinct desks—zonal, regional, or thematic—and play a central role in commissioning and shaping stories. You will work closely with writers, reporters, and senior editors, ensuring every piece meets The Republic’s editorial standards for accuracy, clarity, and intellectual rigor.
This is a remote, part-time role. Sub-editors are expected to successfully commission two stories per month, earning $150 per commissioned story published. If you write stories yourself, you will receive the standard rate of $200 per accepted piece, though commissioned stories remain the primary responsibility.
Key Responsibilities
- Identify emerging issues and commission relevant, high-impact stories.
- Edit features, interviews, essays, and opinion pieces for structure, tone, and flow.
- Fact-check all content for accuracy and consistency.
- Ensure adherence to house style and editorial guidelines.
- Write and refine headlines, standfirsts, captions, and pull quotes.
- Collaborate closely with senior editors and contributors.
- Review final proofs before publication.
Requirements
- Proven experience as a sub-editor, copy editor, or editor in journalism, media, or research.
- Strong command of written English and sound editorial judgment.
- Experience managing writers and working across multiple formats.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to meet deadlines.
- Comfort working remotely within a distributed editorial team.
What The Republic is Looking For
