SING THE TRUTH: Kweli Journal Releases New Short Story Collection

Sing the Truth: A Short Story Collection from Kweli Journal

Sing the Truth is a short story anthology edited by Laura Pegram, with a foreword by award-winning author Edwidge Danticat. The book is published by Authors Equity and distributed by Simon & Schuster.

It marks the fifteenth anniversary of Kweli Journal, a respected literary platform for Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) writers. Over the years, Kweli has earned the nickname “The Paris Review of BIPOC literature.” It has helped launch the careers of many writers now considered essential voices in contemporary literature.

Sing the Truth includes stories from:

  • Naima Coster
  • Nicole Dennis-Benn
  • Daphne Palasi Andreades
  • Susan Muaddi Darraj
  • and other acclaimed contributors

Each story explores a specific emotional or cultural experience. Together, they offer a wide range of perspectives on migration, memory, identity, and family.

Importantly, the collection centers characters navigating change, displacement, and the process of redefining home. While some stories focus on loss, others reflect love, survival, and resilience.

All proceeds from the book go toward supporting Kweli Journal’s mission. The journal continues to provide resources and opportunities for emerging writers of color. Therefore, buying this book also contributes to a more inclusive literary landscape.

According to Edwidge Danticat, the collection allows readers from all backgrounds to engage with underrepresented communities. The stories serve as both mirrors and windows—offering reflection and insight.

In addition, the book has received praise from notable literary figures. Nancy Pearl, a well-known librarian and critic, described the collection as moving and essential. Monique Greenwood, founder of Go On Girl! Book Club, called the writing “brilliant” and emotionally powerful.
