Preservation Foundation Essay Contest: Travel Nonfiction (Pay: $200)

Preservation Foundation Essay Contest is being hosted by The Preservation Foundation, Inc. It is a nonprofit book publisher that is hosting several contests for previously unpublished writers in 2024.

These contests are designed to encourage new voices in nonfiction writing. For the purposes of these contests, unpublished writers are those who have not earned over $250 in a single year through their writing in any form, including royalties, salaries, or freelance work. Submission Guidelines For Preservation Foundation Essay Contest

  • Writers may submit two entries per contest.
  • Submissions outside the contest are unlimited, whether fiction or nonfiction.
  • Entries must be between 1,000 and 5,000 words in length.
  • All entries must be submitted in English.
  • No paper manuscripts; submissions should be in the body of an email or in formats like Word or Open Office. PDFs are not accepted.

What They Want

Preservation Foundation Essay Contest wants nonfiction stories based on real-life experiences, including:

Travel Nonfiction: True accounts of trips taken by the author or someone they know.

What They Don’t Want

  • Semi-fictional or “creative nonfiction” stories.
  • Fictional accounts in nonfiction contests.
  • Use of pen names.

 

Eligibility Criteria

  • Writers who have never earned over $250 from their writing in a single year are eligible.
  • All unpublished writers globally are welcome to enter.
  • Past winners of first prizes may not enter regular contests but may participate in the Winners Circle Contest.
  • Stories must not have been entered in previous Preservation Foundation contests.

 

Author Rights

  • Writers retain full copyright of their stories.
  • Preservation Foundation will host the story on their website as long as the foundation exists.
  • If authors plan to publish their story elsewhere and require it removed, they must contact the foundation, but removal is not guaranteed for winners and finalists.
  • Authors may include one or two JPEG or GIF images with their stories.

Payment and Prizes

First Prize: $200

Runner-Up: $100

Certificates of Achievement: Awarded to all finalists.

Author Requirements For Preservation Foundation Essay Contest

  • Submit a brief biography at the end of each story, including writing credits, city, and country.
  • Ensure the story is publication-ready as no copy-editing services are provided.

Judging

  • Judging will follow the same process as previous years.
