HKBU International Writers’ Workshop 2027 Opens Applications for Fully Funded Residency in Hong Kong

Writers seeking an immersive international residency experience have an exciting opportunity to apply for the Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) International Writers’ Workshop (IWW) 2027, a fully funded four-week residency program that will take place from 26 February to 25 March 2027 in Hong Kong.

Recognized as one of Asia’s most prestigious writers-in-residence programs, the workshop brings together accomplished writers from around the world to pursue their creative projects, exchange ideas, and participate in a vibrant literary community.

There are no application or participation fees, and writers of any age are welcome to apply.

Program Highlights

The Writers-in-Residence Programme begins with a welcome ceremony during the first week, allowing participants to connect with fellow writers and learn more about the residency activities.

The final week culminates in the IWW Literary Festival, where residents are invited to share work related to the 2027 festival theme, “Inheritance.”

The residency provides writers with dedicated time and space to focus on their creative goals while engaging with a diverse international literary community.

Eligibility Requirements for the HKBU International Writers’ Workshop

To be eligible, applicants must:

  • Have published at least one literary book with a recognized press
  • Reside outside Hong Kong
  • Possess a functional command of English or Chinese (Mandarin or Cantonese)
  • Be available to attend the entire residency from 26 February to 25 March 2027
  • Participate in the Welcome Ceremony and Literary Festival
  • Submit all application materials before the deadline

Application Materials

Applicants must submit the following as a single PDF file:

  • A one-page, single-spaced Artist’s Statement describing their work and goals for the residency
  • A 10–12-page sample of recent writing, which may include creative nonfiction, digital writing, drama, fiction, graphic forms, libretti, or poetry
  • A CV or résumé
  • Contact information for two referees
  • English or Chinese translations if the submitted work is written in another language
  • All documents should be formatted in 12-point font with one-inch margins.
  • Applications should be sent via email to iww@hkbu.edu.hk.
