What Is the Africa Wiki Challenge?

The Africa Wiki Challenge is an annual writing and editing contest. Its goal is to improve Wikipedia content about Africa—its history, achievements, struggles, and future. This year, the focus is on justice and reparations. The challenge is open only to people of African descent.

What You Can Do

You can contribute in several ways. First, you can create or improve Wikipedia articles related to African resilience, historical injustices, or reparations. Second, you can upload media files to Wikimedia Commons that reflect key moments in African history. Third, you can translate content into African languages. This will help more people access the stories that matter.

You can also join training sessions and edit-a-thons. These group activities offer support and collaboration opportunities. They also help you build confidence in editing Wikipedia.

To participate, create a Wikipedia account. Then, sign up on the official contest page. You’ll find a list of eligible topics and more details about the challenge.

Importance of the Afrca Wiki Challenge

Africa’s history is rich, complex, and powerful. Yet it remains underrepresented online. Many of the existing narratives are shaped by people outside the continent. The Africa Wiki Challenge helps us correct that imbalance. It encourages Africans to reclaim the narrative and amplify authentic voices.

Your words can help preserve cultural memory. They can also inspire and educate future generations. If you need motivation, read how successful writers found inspiration in dedicated writing spaces.

Final Notes

The Africa Wiki Challenge 2025 is a platform to reshape how the world sees Africa. It’s a call to action for storytellers, historians, and change-makers. By writing, editing, and uploading content, you help ensure that Africa tells its own story—accurately and proudly.
