The Emerging Critics Fellowship / How to Apply

National Book Critics Circle Opens Applications for the 2026–2027 Emerging Critics Fellowship

The National Book Critics Circle (NBCC) is now accepting applications for its highly respected 2026–2027 Emerging Critics Fellowship, a yearlong programme designed to support and mentor the next generation of literary critics.

Open to applicants worldwide, the fellowship seeks critics interested in reviewing and writing about books for print and digital platforms. Whether applicants already have published reviews or are just beginning their journey into literary criticism, the programme offers valuable mentorship, professional development, and access to a vibrant community of critics and writers.

What is the NBCC Emerging Critics Fellowship?

The Emerging Critics Fellowship was created to nurture thoughtful and engaged literary critics. Through workshops, mentorship sessions, and collaborative discussions, fellows develop the skills needed to participate actively in literary conversations and criticism.

The fellowship particularly encourages applications from BIPOC critics, LGBTQIA+ critics, disabled critics, and applicants from historically underrepresented communities.

Over the course of the programme, selected fellows will receive:

  • One-on-one mentorship from NBCC board members
  • Small-group workshops and professional development lectures
  • Access to NBCC events and literary discussions
  • A free one-year NBCC membership

Eligibility for the Emerging Critics Fellowship

The fellowship is open to critics aged 21 and above from all backgrounds and experience levels. Applicants do not need to be U.S. citizens or residents, but they must be available to participate in virtual events and discussions scheduled across Eastern and Pacific time zones.

The programme values applicants who demonstrate curiosity, critical thinking, and a strong interest in literary culture and criticism.

How to Apply

Applicants must submit the following through Submittable:

  • A short bio (50–100 words)
  • Resume or CV
  • A 300–500 word statement of purpose
  • Three writing samples demonstrating critical thinking abilities
  • Two references with contact information

Because writing samples play a major role in the selection process, applicants are encouraged to submit their strongest work.
