Submit to the Dodge Magazine

The Dodge accepts submissions through Submittable for its quarterly issues (Winter, Spring, Summer, Fall). All general submissions in nonfiction, fiction, poetry, translation, and visual art re-open September 1, 2025. Submissions are now fee-free.

What to The Dodge Magazine

  • Eco-writing, writing about animals, and translation on these themes
  • Hybrid and experimental work
  • Fresh perspectives on nature, animals, minerals, fungi, forests, insects, fire, etc.
  • Voices from historically underrepresented communities in publishing and eco-writing (Black, Indigenous, people of color, LGBTQIA+, gender-nonconforming people, people with disabilities, women, and others)

Submission Guidelines for the Dodge Magazine

  • Fiction: Up to 7,000 words. Submit one longer piece or up to three flash pieces (under 1,000 words each). Submit
  • Nonfiction: Up to 7,000 words. One longer piece or up to three flash nonfiction pieces. Submit
  • Poetry: Up to five poems in one document. Submit
  • Translation: Up to 7,000 words prose or eight poems. Must include original text, permissions, and a short introduction (2 pages max). Submit
  • Visual Art: Up to five pieces in .jpg, .jpeg, .png, .pdf, or .tiff. Higher resolution may be requested if accepted. Submit

Formatting & Policies

  • Prose: double-spaced
  • Poetry: single-spaced accepted
  • Include content notes where necessary (violence, sexual assault, racism, suicide, self-harm)
  • Simultaneous submissions allowed; withdraw if accepted elsewhere
  • No previously published work considered
  • No generative AI-assisted work (disclosure required if any AI tools used)
  • Submissions unrelated to eco themes will be declined

Cover Letters

  • Optional except for translation submissions
  • Should include a short bio (50–200 words)
  • Mention prior correspondence, publication in The Dodge, or connections with editors if applicable

Additional Notes

  • Response time: within six months
  • Submit only once or twice a year; wait for response before submitting again
  • Past contributors must wait 12 months from publication before resubmitting
  • Hard copy submissions accepted only from incarcerated writers or those with accessibility needs:
