The Jakes Gerwel Foundation is inviting emerging writers to apply for its Bosberg Book Writing Residency, a unique opportunity designed to support writers who are still in the early stages of their careers. The programme offers time, space, and a creative community in KwaNojoli, providing the ideal environment for writers to develop their manuscripts.
There is no deadline for applications; submissions are assessed on a rolling basis.
Who Can Apply?
The residency is open to emerging writers, defined as writers who:
- Are in the early stages of their career
- Have not yet gained major recognition
- Have not published two or more works with major publishers
- Do not earn a significant portion of their income from writing
Writers working on novels, short stories, or poetry may apply.

Additional Documents for Bosberg Book Writing Residency Applicants
Your submission must include:
- Manuscript
- Novel: at least 20,000 words
- Short story: at least 2,000 words
- Poetry: 15 poems or more in one document
- Motivation letter explaining how you will benefit from the residency
- Letter of recommendation from a publisher, if available (preferred but not mandatory)
