The Toyin Falola Prize is a new literary prize set up in honor the Nigerian historian and professor, Toyin Falola. The prize, which is worth $1000 dollars in cash prize, is awarded for a prose piece that creatively engages “the historicity of an African place, people, time or event”, and it is administered by the Lunaris Review. The deadline for submissions to the Toyin Falola Prize is May 31, 2020.

Who is Eligible:

  • Writers who were born in Africa or who have African parents.
  • All entrants should be between the ages of 15 and 35.
  • Those who are members or relatives of the Lunaris Review Team and Pan-African University Press cannot submit.
  • There is no submission fee.

How to Submit:

  • Submit a piece of between 1500—6000 words.
  • The piece must engage creatively with “the historicity of an African place, people, time or event”. It could be a short story or a nonfictive piece.
  • The submission must be the original work of the entrant.
  • Only an entry per writer.
  • All submissions should be doc. files, Book Antiqua font, 12 pt., with 1.5-line spacing.
  • Document should be saved with the title of the submission.
  • Submit your work to [email protected] with the subject SUBMISSION FOR THE TOYIN FALOLA PRIZE.
  • In the body of the email, include the title of the submission, the genre, word count and your contact information. Don’t include a bio; that would be requested upon selection.
  • The deadline is May 31, 2020.

Prize:

  • The winner will receive $1000.
  • The winner also gets to attend the BIGSAS Festival of African and African-Diasporic Literature in Bayreuth, Germany, on full-funding.
  • Longlisted works will appear in an anthology of the prize.
