Awarded by the Martha Heasley Cox Center for Steinbeck Studies, the Steinbeck Fellowship was set up in honor of author John Steinbeck, and according to their blog, “is guided by his lifetime of work in literature.” The fellowship includes a one-year residency at San Jose State University and a stipend of $15,000. Every year, about 6 fellows are chosen by a selection committee, based on the quality of the candidate’s proposal and other factors that would lead to publications and other achievements.

One of the 2019-2020 fellows is Meron Hadero, the Ethiopian-American writer who was shortlisted for the Caine Prize this year for her short story, “The Wall”, published in McSweeny’s Quaterly Concern.

Who is Eligible to Apply:

  • Any writer writing in English.
  • There is no entry fee.

How to Apply:

  • Submit a project proposal: i.e., the book you want to write during the fellowship program.
  • Submit a resume/ CV.
  • Submit a writing sample of not more than 25 pages. It must be prose; submissions are not received from poets.
  • And, submit the email addresses of three references, who will be alerted to submit recommendations for you.
