Kenyon Review Calls for its 2023 Submission
The Kenyon Review was the vision of poet Roberta Teale Swartz and her husband, Gordon Keith Chalmers, who became the thirteenth president of Kenyon College in 1937. Roberta Teale Swartz, a protege and friend of Robert Frost, published two acclaimed books of poetry. She was also instrumental in recruiting John Crowe Ransom to found a literary magazine in Gambier.
In 2023, the Kenyon review magazine will feature two themed issues, one focused on WOMEN’S HEALTH and one on FOOD.
They invite work that broadly considers these two themes. There will also be submission calls from guest editors to come. In addition to guest-edited folios and thematic materials, they have reserved a significant portion of publication space for work that might be categorized as general submissions. When you submit your work you will have the option to identify it for general consideration or for one of the themed issues. You may not submit the same piece to multiple categories/themes, but simultaneous submissions to other magazines are permitted.
Submission Guidelines for Kenyon Review 2023
The Kenyon Review 2023, consider previously unpublished: short fiction and essays (up to 7,500 words), flash fiction and essays (up to 3 pieces, up to 1,000 words each; please format and submit as a single document), poetry (up to 6 poems; please format and submit as a single document)
plays (up to 30 pages double-spaced) excerpts (up to 30 pages double-spaced) from larger works.
General Guidelines
- Every submission will be read. The response time will vary according to the volume of submissions, though we aim to respond to all submissions within six months of receipt.
- Payment for accepted work is made upon publication.
- Authors retain their copyright and will receive a contract upon acceptance.
- They do not accept paper submissions, except from writers (such as those who are incarcerated) who do not have ready access to the internet. Paper submissions must be postmarked during the month of September and must be accompanied by a self-addressed, stamped envelope. Send hard copies to:

- Please submit no more than one submission in a given genre (Drama, Fiction, Nonfiction, Poetry); multiple submissions will be disregarded.
- You may submit in more than one genre (poetry and fiction, for example) but within each genre, you must choose one category (GENERAL SUBMISSIONS, WOMEN’S HEALTH, FOOD, etc.).
- If you’re not sure what category/theme your submission falls under, you can choose “General Submission.” Everything will be considered for publication, regardless of the category you select.
- They read everything, and may decide that your submission fits with a different category/theme than the one you selected.
- Poets: group up to six poems in a single document and then upload your submission instead of submitting them individually.
- Submitting work to the Kenyon Review simultaneously adds you to the mailing lists. You may unsubscribe from these lists at any time.
- Please be sure to add the Kenyon Review’s email address ([email protected]) to your spam blocker software so that you can receive correspondence from us.
- They generally follow the Chicago Manual of Style and Webster’s Eleventh New Collegiate Dictionary.
